English
I'm a native English speaker with a definite talent for clear, readable and precise writing in scientific and technical fields.

German
Family connections first exposed me to German, but it was during my time living in Germany that I learned to speak the language. This went a lot faster and more easily than I expected, and within 2 years I got my Kleines Deutsches Sprachdiplom, with a top grade. By now, I've been living in German-speaking countries for over 15 years. I've had plenty of practice speaking (including in front of an audience), writing, reading German for work, with friends, in NGOs... with this experience, I don't miss much in a German text.

Science
I have a Ph.D. in biochemistry, and I spent over 10 years working in basic research. Biochemical research work is interdisciplinary by nature: the methods are chemical and physical, but the underlying questions are mostly medical. This background makes me a scientific allrounder, and I can easily get a good grasp of new scientific and technical subject areas.

Other Subjects
As a translator I've worked in a variety of subject areas: mechanical and materials engineering, pharmaceutical quality management, social enterprise, waste handling & recycling, health services. As a campaigner for everyday cycling, I've acquired a certain level of expertise in street engineering, mobility and traffic safety.

Language Teaching
I spent a while working full–time as an English trainer, and got >2000 hours of experience with an internationally known language teaching company. I have also given courses by myself as a freelancer, but for organizational and capacity reasons, I prefer to concentrate on shorter interventions that complement my translation and writing work.
